The Convent of Pleasure is a play of laughter, lesbianism, and rebellious ladies. This reimagining of Margaret Cavendish’s 1668 closet drama orients the play in an explicitly queer space somewhere between past and present. The production seeks to bring to the foreground the queer ancestry present in classic texts.
Directed by Hannah Leigh and Deepali Rose Foster, this 2023 production in London’s King’s College Chapel attracted attention from the Times Literary Supplement and the International Margaret Cavendish Society, praised for highlighting Cavendish’s relevance in the modern day.
